Homeless (Alexus)

Homeless (Alexus)

I met Alexus at a Salvation Army shelter in Philadelphia.  In talking to her I felt that she was in many ways not dissimilar to myself; but certainly she was someone whose life circumstances had brought her to a very different place. As I spoke to her, I was humbled and amazed to hear one word repeated over and over again : grateful. Dispossessed and homeless - yet grateful.  Although much of her life had been spent in various homeless situations - either in a shelter, camping out with various family members, and for one brief period of time actually on the street - she had an indomitable spirit and spoke about her hopes of finding work and providing a real home for her child, Michael.
